One day, one place: Aspen in fall

If you had one day to spend time in a place, what would be your strategy? Divide and conquer?

Find the shortest path between the places you want to see? Run from one place to another as you learn about them? Whatever the preferred strategy is, the crucial part we often overlook is to enjoy and appreciate every moment of the vacation. With that, I can share my one-day trip to Aspen in fall, which taught me that appreciation can open doors to more joyful moments.

Aspen is a ski resort with its well-known black-diamond terrain in Colorado. Going to Aspen in fall might seem like a bizarre choice until you come across the fall foliage in Maroon Bells.

Maroon Bells

One day, one park: Maroon Bells, Aspen--the most photographed place in Aspen, and for a reason. Many options for hiking with great views. Colors of the leaves--green, yellow, orange, red-- are stunning. The trails you shouldn't miss while you are there:

Scenic Loop: This trail takes you into the heart of the picturesque mountain, lake, and Aspen trees of Maroon Bells. If you have time for one hike, it should be this. As you walk into the cluster of trees, don't forget to look back: views are amazing.

Scenic Loop

Maroon Creek trail: this is a rather long hike about 3 miles. You start hiking along the creek first, then the landscape transforms itself into a rocky form first, and then gradually it integrates you into the part of the forest with fall foliage. We hear that there is a moose family along the trail, but we couldn't spot them. If you encounter one, please leave some space between you and the animal as they tend to be protective of their territory.

Let's talk about food and drinks.

Venga Venga Cantina: We ordered churro, a Mexican dessert, at this place. My first impression was "This is the best dessert I've ever had in the U.S!" With every bite of it, it transformed into "This is the best dessert I've ever had in my life". This churro is filled with caramel, served with ice cream, caramel, and chocolate sauces. It's to die for. Don't forget to order margarita.

Ajax Tavern: It gets hot up in the mountains during noon. Hydration is important, so is the lavender martini. If you want to snack on something before dinner, try avocado chunks plate with this special cocktail.

'Where to stay,' you ask, and I say 'Pokolodi Lodge' or 'Wildwood'. These are cheap accommodation options in Snowmass---another village nearby Aspen. They both have hot tube and heated pool. If you stay at one of the hotels, and you think you didn't get enough workout from the Maroon Bells hiking, try to run Nature Trail. What a challenge, especially if you don't live in high altitudes. Furthermore, you might spot deers, up and close. I spotted 4 deers when running this trail, exactly after I briefly stopped to give myself a moment to appreciate my short but awesome vacation.

Every season is beautiful. Go out and be a part of the transformation of nature into fall season.

Cheers!
